White Tiger BBQ, Athens, Georgia

24 Hours in Athens, Georgia

April 19, 2018 by Amy Johns in Atlanta, Georgia, Guide, Itinerary, The South, Travel, USA

With summer fast approaching, its a great season to get out and explore! We love making the quick road-trip up to Athens, Georgia in the summer when school is out. Its less crowded and has a very laid back college town vibe...minus the one zillion college kids!

Last summer we took Elizabeth with us for a 24 hour excursion and had a great time exploring, eating BBQ, and beer tasting! Here are my top picks for where to eat, sleep, drink and play if you find yourself in Athens for the day...

Eat

The White Tiger Gourmet: It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside you'll find some pretty great barbeque, a laid back vibe and, with shelves full of toys, a great place to take the kids!

Ted's Most Best: Again, very kid friendly! There is a great outdoor area, complete with sandbox! We usually enjoy some garlic knots and pizza! Good for lunch or dinner.

5&10: This spot is more upscale and I would say less kid friendly. We ate hear on a different trip pre-Elizabeth and had a really great meal. The cocktails were on point!

Mama's Boy: If you're in Athens, Mama's Boy is the spot for a good ol' breakfast. We got there early and were seated right away, but be prepared to wait if you arrive later in the morning.

Independent Baking Co.: Coffee and pastries because at snack time you need coffee, kids need pastries. Nuff said.

Play

Creature Comforts Brewing: This one has become a huge favorite across Georgia and we love going and spending an afternoon. They often have a band and food going outside and inside there is lots of seating and usually an art display. Plenty of room for the kids to run around too!

Rooftop at Georgia Theatre: Great rooftop bar to grab a drink and take in the Athens "skyline."

State Botanical Garden of Georgia: We spent the morning here just wandering around. Lots of beautiful gardens and flowers and the conservatory is pretty cool.

Terrapin Beer Co.: Another great brewery option and they usually have a band on the weekend.

Stay

Hotel Indigo: The price and location were just right for us! Newly remodeled and less than a 10 minute walk to the downtown area, the hotel has a great lobby bar and outdoor seating area. We would absolutely stay here again!
